In real estate, you never know what surprises await behind a property’s doors. Over the years, I’ve seen some truly unexpected things, but one discovery stands out as the craziest experience I’ve ever had.
A few years ago, I was working with first-time buyers, searching for their perfect home in Saint-Polycarpe. After viewing several properties, we arrived at an old, run-down house. From the outside, the home itself wasn’t remarkable. However, behind it stood an enormous barn—measuring roughly 75 by 150 feet.
Curious, we decided to check it out. Inside, a wooden staircase led up to the second floor, where stacks of hay completely filled the space. It looked like nothing more than a storage area—until we noticed something unusual.
Among the bales of hay, we spotted a remote control with a single button. None of us knew what it did, but someone pressed it.
Suddenly, the hay split apart, guillotine-style, revealing a second door—a cooler-style door, like the entrance to a giant walk-in fridge. At this point, we knew we had stumbled upon something unexpected.
When we opened the door, what we saw left us speechless. Hidden inside the hay bales was a fully functional grow-op—an entire cultivation setup, complete with an advanced cooling system, HVAC units, and rows of batteries powering the operation.
It was an elaborate design, concealed so well that no one would have suspected anything. We stood there, stunned. How had something like this existed in plain sight, completely unnoticed?
This experience was one of the most shocking moments in my career. I had only been in real estate for a short time back then, and this was a real eye-opener.
As brokers, we come across all kinds of surprises when touring properties—but discovering a hidden, high-tech grow-op behind a secret hay wall? That was something I never saw coming.
